Obituary for Marie Golden Shanks Marie Golden Shanks
Rehobeth United Methodist Church Member Was Millboro Resident

Marie Golden Shanks, age 87, of 492 T. C. Walker Road, Millboro, Virginia, passed away Tuesday April 3, 2018 at her residence surrounded by her family.

Born October 6, 1930 in Selma, Virginia, she was a daughter of the late John Wesley Golden, Sr. and Ardelia Walters Golden.

Marie attended Central High School and was a homemaker throughout her life. She enjoyed spending time with her family and attending her grandchildren's sporting events. She always celebrated special occasions by eating at Trani's Grill in Covington and sparring with Mike.

She was an avid dirt track race fan and a member of Rehobeth United Methodist Church.

In addition to her parents, Marie was preceded in death by her husband, Wilson Shanks, who died December 2, 2006; and six siblings, Junior, Wayne, Paul, Pauline, Ruth, and Jewel.

She is survived by son, Mike (Carol) Shanks of Millboro; daughters, Pam (Jeff) Hicks of Alton, IL, Donna (Rickey) Armstrong of Millboro; and Jeanie Rooklin of Covington; her brother, Ronnie Golden of Jacksonville, NC; sisters, Marguerite Bunch of Clifton Forge, Mildred Keyser of Abingdon, and Carol Grady of Covington; nine grandchildren, Denise, Amber, Suzanna, Sarah, Abby, Krista, Hillard, Kent, and Maggie; nine great grandchildren, Colton, Hayden, Carter, Macey, Lilly, Kennedy, Pierce, Quinn, and Cole; numerous nieces and nephews, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, including a loving sister-in-law Emma Jean Shanks; her special friends, Madeline Harris and Christian Bunch; and a special caregiver, Margaret Booth.

The family would like offer special thanks to Mountain Regional Hospice for the excellent care given to Marie. A funeral service will be held on Friday, April 6, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge, with Mr. Jeff Hicks officiating. Interment will follow in Rehobeth Church Cemetery, Pig Run, Bath County. The grandchildren and great grandchildren will serve as pallbearers for their beloved Nanny.

The family will receive friends on Thursday evening from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Nicely Funeral Home, and other times at the residence. The family requests memorial tributes take the form of contributions to Millboro Area Rescue Squad, P. O. Box 295, Millboro, VA 24460.
