Obituary for Gladys Mae Bates Gladys Mae Bates
Buena Vista Resident Dies At Age 100

Gladys Mae Bates, 100, of Buena Vista, Virginia went home to be with the Lord, Tuesday, April 17, 2018 at Kendal Assisted Living Center.

Born June 15, 1917 in Rockbridge County, she was one of seven children born to William McKinley Huffman and Regina Greene Huffman of Rockbridge County.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Charlie Lee Bates, and dear son, David Lee Bates.

Gladys was a sublime example of selflessness, love and faith to all who knew her. She enjoyed quilting, gardening, spending time with her family, cooking, and serving the Lord. She lived a long, beautiful life, all the while maintaining a bright and youthful spirit, a desire to help others, and a strong penchant for living graciously. Gladys will sincerely be remembered for her quiet strength, caring nature, and thankfulness to God for His many daily blessings.

Gladys is survived by her son, Joseph "Joe" Bates, of Buena Vista, Donna Bates Tomlin and husband Larry Tomlin, of Inman, South Carolina; six grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; and sister, Mary Bates Humphries.

A funeral service to celebrate Gladys's life will be held ‪2 p.m. Friday, April 20, 2018 at the Buena Vista Pentecostal Holiness Church conducted by the Rev. W. A. Mills Jr. Interment will follow at Green Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to Kendal at Lexington and the Rockbridge Area Hospice Service for their service to caring for Gladys during her final days and last few years. We are grateful for your kindness and dedication to making Gladys's stay in all capacities comforting and peaceful. She was always in good hands.

Arrangements are being handled by Bolling, Grose, & Lotts Funeral Home and Cremation Services.
