Obituary for Reverend Gordon Dean Hammond Reverend Gordon Dean Hammond
Longtime Minister Was Michigan Native

With great sadness the family of Reverend Gordon Dean Hammond announces his passing after a brief illness on Wednesday, April 18, 2018 at the age of 79 years.

Gordon will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 58 years, Charlene, and by his children, Bruce (Dawn), Scott (Karen), Andy (Deanna), Cindy (David) and Susan (Shawn). Gordon will be fondly remembered by his three grandchildren, Kris, Sarah and William, and by his loving brothers, Robert (Judy), Gary (Sally), Randall (Bernadette) and Brian (Dondeena).

Gordon was predeceased by his parents, Bernard and Loretta Hammond.

Gordon was a dedicated family man, who was always ready to lend a helping hand. As a pastor in two states, Michigan and then Virginia, Gordon positively affected the lives of thousands of individuals. His schedule was constantly filled with visits to hospitals, jails and prisons and to homes of the sick and elderly.

Most of his adult life was dedicated to helping others and he spent all of his retirement time not in the pursuit of personal gain, adventure or entertainment, but in the aggressive quest to help just one more person in their time of need.

Gordon grew up on a farm in Michigan, where the harvesting of crops and management of livestock wasn't just a hobby, but a necessity to survive. As such, he and his brothers gained a wealth of experience in agriculture, building craft, masonry, time management and inventiveness.

A more gifted group of brothers would be nearly impossible to find and they've maintained contact throughout the years, sharing the joy of their families, successes and comradery.

One of Gordon's technical gifts was as a machinist working very successfully for several companies in Michigan and Virginia, where many accolades were given to his incredible talent.

Reverend Hammond will be missed by everyone who knew him. Please join his family and friends in a celebration of his life at Nicely Funeral Home, 405 Alleghany Street, Clifton Forge, VA 24422 (Phone 540.862.4157). The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 28, 2018 in the chapel of Nicely Funeral Home with Pastor Ronald Turner officiating. An interment will follow at the Mountain View Cemetery, Clifton Forge, VA 24422.

Visitation will be Friday, April 27th from 5-7 p.m. at Nicely Funeral Home.
