Lexington Resident Dies At Age 89

Peyton Winfield Rochelle, 89, of Lexington, Virginia passed away at home on April 28, 2018.

He was born in Somerville, N.J., on Oct. 18, 1928 to Lydia Craighill Rochelle and Phillip Titus Rochelle.

He is survived by his wife, Ursula Rochelle; daughter, Diane (James) Dennison of Colorado Springs; son, Scott (Susie Trimble) Rochelle of Rockbridge County; sister, Wistar (Nathanial) Jobe of Rockbridge County; stepsons, Barry (Lisa) Inman, Dwight (Eileen) Inman; extended family members, many friends, and his beloved dog, Elvis.

He is predeceased by his parents and his granddaughter, Christine Cottey.

Peyton attended Episcopal High School in Alexandria. During his youth he spent many hours helping his father on the family farm and in his uncle's greenhouse. He worked as an electrician and was in real estate sales. He was also the tax assessor of Chester Township, N.J. for 29 years, retiring in 1991 at which time he moved to Rockbridge Baths.

He loved sports throughout his life – golf, baseball, bowling and ping-pong, and he excelled in all of them – being scouted by the New York Yankees once and having 4 holes-in-one in his lifetime. He was a man who always needed to stay busy.

He was an active member of Manly Memorial Baptist Church, enjoyed fixing clocks and watches, working on his flowers, restoring John Deere tractors, and giving from his heart a helping hand to those in need.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, May 3, 2018 at 11 a.m. at Manly Memorial church. Memorial contributions may be made to Manly Memorial Baptist Church.

Arrangements are being handled by Harrison Funeral Home.
