Gala Native Was Class Valedictorian, Active In His Church

If you ever met our father, our grandfather, great-grandfather, my brother, Sylvester Brown, you know just how much his family and friends meant to him. Even more than that though, you know what the Lord meant to him. You understand that during his life he took all things, all worries and all challenges to the Cross. He loved the Lord with all his heart. And he was incredibly blessed.

Sylvester was born on March 31, 1930 in Gala, Virginia. He was blessed to share a lifetime of love with his high school sweetheart, Lillian (Peachie), whom he married on December 24, 1950. From that union, he was blessed with eleven adoring children, nine loving grandchildren and four loving great-grandchildren.

Our father, our grandfather, our great-grandfather, my brother departed this world on Monday, April 30, 2018. Sylvester was the son of the late Louise Crawford and was preceded in death by his beloved Peachie.

Sylvester leaves to cherish his beautiful memory eleven children, Fred Brown (Michele), of Roanoke, VA, Vivian Stancil, of Springfield, VA, Angela "Gail" Brown, of Leland, NC, Etta Bennett (Harold), of Bowie, MD, Debra Bannister, of Bowie, MD, Ronnie Brown, of Lynchburg, VA, Patricia Brown, of Bowie, MD, Everett "Biggie" Brown (Naja), of Burke, VA, Robin LeGrand, of Springfield, VA, Forrest "Peedie" Brown (Sherrie), of Roanoke, VA and Sylvette "Vette" Brown, of Alpharetta, GA. Also left to cherish his memory are his loving sister, Lucille Sparrow; one sister-in-law, Corrine "Noonie" Burrell, of Detriot, MI; nine grandchildren, Andrea "Pookie" Easterly, of Alpharetta, GA, Nikia Stancil, of Fredericksburg, VA, Alicia Brown, of Roanoke, VA, Reggie Brown, of Bedford, VA, Ashley Camm (Les), of Lynchburg, VA, Sierra "Si" Brown, of Silver Spring, MD, Airman Chancellor "Chance" Green, of Holloman Air Force Base, New Mexico, Sydnee Brown, of Burke, VA, Makenzie Mays, of Alpharetta, GA; four great-grandchildren, Hailey Easterly, of Alpharetta, GA, Jaden Brooks, of Fredericksburg, VA, Thiago Tandazo, of Silver Spring, MD and Morgan Camm, of Lynchburg, VA; two adopted daughters, Diana Ring and Stacey Johnson; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, extended family and friends.

He was a graduate of Academy Hill High School in Fincastle, VA, where he was valedictorian of his class. He was a devoted, lifelong and dedicated member of the Rising Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Gala, VA. He joined Rising Mt. Zion at an early age where he held many positions, including Chairman of the Deacon Board. He also sang on the church choir. He was a biblical scholar. Sylvester loved his home church and was also active at the Lapsleys Run Baptist Church in Fincastle, VA.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, May 5, 2018 in the Hamlar-Curtis Chapel with the Pastor David Halsey officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
