Obituary for Thomas Vernon Litzenburg Jr. Thomas Vernon Litzenburg Jr.
Professor, Episcopal Priest Dies At Age 84

Thomas Vernon Litzenburg Jr. of Lexington, Virginia died May 19, 2018 at Kendal at Lexington.

He was born October 18, 1933 in Baltimore, Maryland, the son of the late Thomas Vernon Litzenburg and Charlotte Lee Donnelly Litzenburg.

He was a graduate of St. Paul's School, Washington and Lee University, Yale University and Princeton University. He was a professor of philosophy and chaplain at Wells College; assistant chairman of National Endowment for the Humanities; executive director for policy of the Association of American Universities; president of Salem Academy and College; adviser to the president, director of the Reeves Center, and acting chaplain at Washington and Lee University, a member of Phi Beta Kappa, a Danforth Fellow and an ordained priest of the Episcopal Church.

Surviving are one son, Timothy Andrew Litzenburg; a daughter, Emma Litzenburg Ball (Thad Ball); and grandchildren, Jasper Ball, Tristan Litzenburg and Piper Litzenburg.

A memorial service will take place at 9:30 a.m. Friday, May 25, 2018 at Grace Episcopal Church. A private burial will precede the service. A reception will follow at Kendal Hall.
