Obituary for Richard E. Whipple Richard E. Whipple
Former Rockwell International Employee Taught At W&L, Roanoke College

Richard E. Whipple, 89, of Roanoke, Virginia, formerly of Rockbridge County, died Wednesday, June 20, 2018.

Mr. Whipple had retired early from his career in the aerospace division of Rockwell International. He later followed his love of teaching and joined the faculty at Washington and Lee University and Roanoke College, where he enjoyed instructing many in business and accounting courses.

He loved collecting antique clocks and woodworking. He served as director of the National Association of Watch and Clock collectors on the national level and locally served as president of the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia Chapter 32, club of clock collectors.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Harrison and Clara Whipple; and a son, Rick Whipple.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Ruth Bohner Whipple; a son, Doug Surber; a daughter, Denise Pollock; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 23, at Oakey's South Chapel by Tim Harris. A graveside service will follow at 1:30 p.m. in Stonewall Jackson Cemetery in Lexington.

Contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or to the Roanoke Valley SPCA.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Saturday at Oakey's South Chapel (540-989-3131).
