Obituary for Gertrude Lawhorne Campbell Gertrude Lawhorne Campbell
Burlington Industries Retiree Was Active In Her Community

Gertrude Lawhorne Campbell, 93, of Lynchburg, Virginia passed away on Wednesday, June 20, 2018 at the Avante Nursing Home in Lynchburg.

She was born on December 17, 1924, a daughter of the late Grover Cleveland Lawhorne and the late Elsie Stinnett Lawhorne.

She was the loving wife of the late Elwood Campbell.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Marjorie Byers and Hazel Palmer, and two brothers, Eugene Lawhorne and Gomer Lawhorne.

She is survived by her only son, David Joe Campbell and his wife, Rebecca and their son, Philip Scott Smith.

Gertrude was a retiree of Burlington Industries Inc., serving 43 years in payroll, accounts payable and receivables. She was active in home demonstration work, as well as a 4-H leader, and she worked with the Scouts, Women's Missionary Council, and Women's Fellowship of Church. She was also a Sunday school teacher, and had held numerous offices in her church.

After retirement, she was a Pink Lady at Stonewall Jackson Hospital and she studied nursing through Dabney Lancaster College. She received her CNA and CPR certificates. Gertrude also worked part time on the medical surgical floor at Stonewall Jackson Hospital. Later in life, she chose the field of home health nursing. She also volunteered at Rockbridge Area Hospice.

A private graveside service will be conducted at Rockbridge Memorial Gardens, 116 Peaceful Lane, Lexington, VA 24450 by Pastor Terry Bostic of Faith Baptist Church officiating.
