Longtime W&L Journalism Dept. Secretary Dies At Age 97

Florence Garrett Cook, born December 11, 1920, passed away on July 16, 2018.

Flossy was born in Philadelphia, Pa., and grew up in Swarthmore, Pa.

In 1946 she married Jay D. Cook Jr. and they moved to Granville, Ohio, where Jay taught at Denison College. In 1953 Jay started teaching accounting at Washington and Lee University. Several years later, Flossy became secretary to the head of journalism department at W&L and kept that position until retiring in 1988.

Flossy was active with the Lexington Presbyterian Church and Maury River Quaker meetings. She was an avid bridge player and loved gardening and very much enjoyed her flowers.

A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, July 20, 2018 at Stonewall Jackson Cemetery by the Rev. Deb Klein.

Arrangements are by Harrison Funeral Home & Crematory.
