Obituary for William (Bill) Castleman Dawson Jr. William (Bill) Castleman Dawson Jr.
Peace Corps, State Department Employee Was Lexington Resident

William (Bill) Castleman Dawson Jr., 74, died Friday, July 20, 2018 of cancer at his home in Lexington, Virginia.

He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Latha (Bedre) Dawson; his daughters, Linda and Grace; his sister, Margaret O'Kain, brother-in-law, Bill O'Kain; and two devoted cats.

Born July 14, 1944, in Frankfort, Ky., the son of William Dawson Sr. and Edna (Brown) Dawson.

Bill was raised in Ft. Mitchell, Ky. He graduated from Hanover College and received his master's degree in international relations from American University.

Bill spent much of his life overseas in the Peace Corps and with the Department of State. He met his wife, Latha, while on assignment in Madras, India.

Retiring to Lexington in 2000, he enthusiastically pursued his interest in American history through his involvement with the Lee Chapel, the Stonewall Jackson House, the Rockbridge Civil War Round Table, and as a member of the SAR.

He will be remembered by friends in Lexington and around the world for his unique sense of humor and his competitiveness on the tennis court.

A memorial service will be held at Lexington Presbyterian Church on August 18 at 1 p.m. with a short reception to follow.
