Falling Springs Resident Was Avid Traveler, Granbery Memorial United Methodist Church Member

Nellie Anderson Burns, 90, of Falling Springs, Virginia died Tuesday, July 31, 2018 at the Woodland Nursing Home in Clifton Forge, Virginia.

She was born on May 18, 1928 in Lewisburg, WV, a daughter of Samuel N. Anderson and Marie Cook Anderson. They lived on a farm at Savannah Lane, nine miles North of Lewisburg.

After graduating from Frankford High School, she graduated from Greenbrier College in Lewisburg, and Katherine Gibbs Secretarial School in New York.

She was employed as a secretary at Burlington Mills, White Sulphur Springs, WV, and Westvaco in Covington, Virginia.

She married Henry L. Burns on October 3, 1953. She and her husband were avid travelers. During their 31 years of marriage until his death in October, 1984, they toured the 48 states and several countries of Europe and islands. Traveling and gardening gave her great pleasure. In 2003 she was honored with a membership in the Travelers Century Club qualifying having visited over 100 countries or island groups.

She was a member of Granbery Memorial United Methodist Church, served on the Board of Stewards, and was a member of the Philathea Sunday School Class, and the Berean Bible Group. She was a member of the Falling Spring Home Extension Club and the Woodland Garden Club.

She was dedicated to visiting olders people, sick, and shut-ins.

She is survived by a sister, Frances A. Hobbs of Millboro Springs; nieces, Donna Towery and husband, Steve of Phoenix City, AL, Tammy Sharp and husband, Mark of Newport News, VA; nephews, Eric Hobbs and wife, Caryn of Newland, NC, John Hobbs of Millboro Springs, VA, Todd Hanger, and Kim White of Alderson, WV. She is also survived by great nieces and nephews, Rebekah Hundley, Sarah Sharp, Taylor Hobbs, Lacey White, Wesley Hobbs, Laban Towery, Adam Towery, Jonathan Towery, Andrew Hobbs, Aaron Hobbs, and Alex Hobbs.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, August 6 at Granbery Memorial United Methodist Church with the Rev. Russell Urban officiating. Visitation will be at 10:00 a.m. prior to the service.

Interment will be in the Cedar Hill Cemetery in Covington.

Pallbearers will be: Eric Hobbs, John Hobbs, Mark Sharp, Steve Towery, Todd Hanger, and Gary Morgan.

Honorary Pallbearers are Mike Douglas, Andy Wiseman, Roger Wiseman, Mark Campbell, Warren Kyle, Robert Phillips, Robert Lockhart, Richard Ailstock, Wallace Winebriner and Curt Martin.

Memorial contributions may be made to Granbery Memorial United Methodist Church, 425 W. Main St., Covington, Virginia 24426.
