U. S. Navy Korean War Veteran Was Hot Springs Resident

Button Guinnett (B.G.) McElwee, Jr., 86, of Hot Springs, Virginia passed away Tuesday, August 14, 2018 at Bath Community Hospital in Hot Springs, Virginia.

He was born October 7, 1931 in Hot Springs, the son of the late Button Guinnett McElwee, Sr. and Christine Griffith Lucas McElwee.

He was a veteran of the U. S. Navy, having served during the Korean War.

Mr. McElwee retired December 1, 1995 from the Homestead Resort Commissary Department. He was a member of the Virginia Chapel United Methodist Church and the VFW.

B. G. was an avid Redskin fan and Bath County Chargers fan, who rarely missed a game. He enjoyed golfing. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather.

He is survived by his wife, Rachel Marie McElwee, whom he married on November 10, 1960; two children, Richard McElwee of Salem, Virginia and Christine McElwee of Roanoke, Virginia; two grandchildren, Kelly Altizer and husband, Damin of Crozet, Virginia and Brittany McElwee and husband, Michael Duff of Charlottesville, Virginia; a great grandchild, Kate Hays Altizer of Crozet; a special cousin, Kay Sykes of Knoxville, Tennessee; three sisters-in-law, Ina Turner and husband Eddie, Betty Schooler and Faye Harold; and a number of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert "Stack" McElwee and a sister-in-law, Carol McElwee; two brothers-in-law, Paul Schooler and Paul Harold.

A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, August 19, 2018 at McLaughlin & Young Funeral Home with Pastor Lorrie Aikens officiating.
