Mountain Grove Resident Was Longtime Pilot, Retired Westvaco Machinist

Michael Gaston (M.G.) O_Farrell, Jr., 88, of Mountain Grove, Virginia passed away Sunday, September 2, 2018 at Carillion Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

He was born January 3, 1930 in Hot Springs, Virginia, the son of Michael G. O'Farrell, Sr. and Evelyn Blanche Fisher O'Farrell.

He was married to his wife, Janice Ryder O'Farrell for over 59 years. They were married August 2, 1959 at The Mountain Grove Methodist Church.

Retiring from Westvaco Corporation in Covington, Virginia in 1989, he returned to his beloved family farm in Mountain Grove. M. G.'s passion was flying, and he, as an instrument-rated pilot, flew many trips all over the United States and Canada.

M. G. was a graduate machinist of Hower Vocational School and East Akron High School in Akron, Ohio. While serving four years in the United States Air Force Strategic Air Command, he spent 14 months at Boston University and one year at The University of Illinois.

Surviving are his wife, Janice; a son, Michael G. O'Farrell, III and wife, Carolina of Clifton Forge, Virginia, a daughter, Linda O'Farrell Kurz and husband, Mark of Gainesville, Virginia; three grandchildren, Haley, Jack, and Charlie Kurz of Gainesville; a brother-in-law, Ray Ryder and wife, Collie of Mountain Grove; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Patricia O'Farrell Johnsson and her husband, Thomas C. Johnsson.

A graveside service will be held 11:00 a.m., Friday, September 7, 2018 at the Mountain Grove Cemetery with Revered Dick Boyer officiating. Pallbearers will be Pete Byers, Robert Campbell, John Roberts, Chester Smith, Jack Kurz, Charlie Kurz.

The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 6:30 – 8:00 p.m. at McLaughlin Funeral Home.
