Obituary for Henry Sharp Jr. Henry Sharp Jr.
Former W&L Mathematics Professor Dies At Age 94

Henry Sharp Jr., 94, of Lexington, Virginia died Sunday, September 23, 2018 at Kendal. Born in Nashville, Tennessee on October 14, 1923, the elder son of Henry and Jessie Kerr Sharp.

He married Victoria H. Alexander in 1957, daughter of the Reverend and Mrs. John M. Alexander of Atlanta, Georgia.

He is survived by his son, Henry Kerr Sharp, Ph.D., of Charlottesville, Virginia, and his daughter, Margaret Lewis Sharp, R.N., of Crested Butte, Colorado.

Hank graduated in Civil Engineering from Vanderbilt University, after having served with the United States Army Corps of Engineers in World War II. Duke University awarded him a Ph.D. in Mathematics in 1952. He taught for three years at the Georgia Institute of Technology, followed by twenty-seven years on the faculty of Emory University. In 1983, he accepted the Rupert and Lillian Radford Chair of Mathematics at Washington and Lee University, where he remained as Head of the Mathematics Department until retirement in 1991.

Among his many activities in retirement, Hank volunteered as a mentor/tutor in the Lexington and Rockbridge County public schools, where he earned the esteem of many young students, parents, and teachers. He served as treasurer and board member for the Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities, and was a founding board member for the Kendal at Lexington Retirement Community, where he and his wife were among the first residents.

He will be missed by his many loving friends and family. A memorial service will be held at Lexington Presbyterian Church at 2 p.m., on Saturday afternoon, September 29, 2018 with a reception to follow at Kendal Hall.
