Well-Known Rockbridge Area Trumpet Player Dies At Age 65

Curtis Cleming Swisher departed this world for a better one September 14, 2018.

Curtis was born in Lexington January 30, 1953 in the original Stonewall Jackson Hospital. He spent his early childhood in Fairfield and carried a love for Rockbridge County and Virginia history until the end. Richmond became his home during his adult years.

Curtis was well-known in the area for his music, having performed as a soloist and trumpet player many times in Lexington and Buena Vista with the Rhondels and Fat Ammon's Band.

He was preceded in death by his father, Lawrence Buford Swisher, and a brother, Samuel Massie Swisher.

Curtis is survived by one daughter, Elizabeth Rae Swisher of Yorktown; one sister, Margaret Ruth Robertson of Washington, D.C.; and one brother, Bill Robertson of Massachusetts.

Curtis is also survived by his mother, Olantha Campbell Robertson of Fairfield; a devoted uncle and namesake, Wendal Cleming Campbell; and a loving aunt, Dorcas Campbell Mallory.

A celebration of life will be held Sunday, October 7, at 3 p.m. at Fairfield United Methodist Church. A reception will follow.
