Former Buena Vista Police Chief Was Rockbridge County Native

Lewis Edward Plogger, 70, of Buena Vista, Virginia, died peacefully on Wednesday, October 3, 2018 at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital surrounded by his loving family.

He was born November 19, 1947 in Rockbridge County and grew up in Buena Vista.

Lewis was a loving husband, devoted father, and beloved "Pop".

He is preceded in death by his parents, William Roscoe Plogger and Elsie Pugh Plogger Miller.

Lewis is survived by his wife, Mary Ellen Byers Plogger, who was his best friend and the love of his life for 47 years; his son, Christopher; his loving grandson, Eli, and Eli's mother, Heather Zollman. He is also survived by his brothers and sister, James (Barbara) Plogger, of Maryville, Tenn.; Albert (Mary) Plogger, Brenda (Bobby) Presnell, of Buena Vista, Va., a special sister-in-law, Elaine Byers Shafer of Roanoke, Va., and numerous nieces and nephews.

Lewis graduated from Parry McCluer High School and Dabney S. Lancaster Community College. He was a police officer in Buena Vista for 37 years, serving as Chief of Police for the last 17 years until his retirement in 2007.

After retirement, he worked for the Buena Vista City Sheriff's Office as a bailiff for several years.

Lewis was actively involved in city civic affairs. He served on the Planning Commission, the City Council, the Board of Directors of the Buena Vista Rescue Squad, and he also served as President of the Buena Vista Food Bank-Community Share Project.

He was a dedicated, faithful member of Stone Church of the Brethren. Lewis was an accomplished woodworking craftsman. His family home is filled with his beautiful handmade pieces of furniture and his lovely grandfather clocks. He was also a Mr. Fix-It in every way.

Lewis will be deeply missed by his family and community who greatly admired, loved and respected him. He was a friend to all and a mentor to many. Arrangements included family visitation from 3 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, October 7, 2018 at Stone Church of the Brethren and memorial service at 11 a.m. on Monday, October 8, 2018 also at the church with the Rev. Victor S. Norris officiating. In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial donation to Stone Church of the Brethren, 2162 Forest Avenue, Buena Vista, Va. 24416, the Buena Vista Rescue Squad, P. O. Box 668, Buena Vista, Va., or to a charity of your choice.
