Obituary for Elsie Irvine Hall Elsie Irvine Hall
Sprint/Centel Telephone Operator Was Rockbridge County Native

Elsie Irvine Hall, 81, of Lexington died Thursday, October 25, 2018 at her home.

She was born January 8, 1937 in Rockbridge County, a daughter of the late Johnie William Irvine and Lucille Rogers Reid Irvine.

The youngest of 12 children, Elsie was preceded in death by one sister, Frenchie Dudding, and nine brothers: Leo, Louis, Estle, Marion "Joe", Emmanuel "Danny", Emmette, Francis "Pete", James "Bill" and Delbert Irvine.

Elsie retired from Sprint/Centel after 37 years of service as a telephone operator.

She was a charter-member of the Collierstown Baptist Church, where she served in many capacities. Elsie along with her husband, Oscar, spent hours each Sunday going from home to home in Lexington picking up children and families and taking them to church. It wasn't unusual for Elsie to invite children back to her home on Sundays for a good lunch and often sent them home with clean clothes and other necessities. She taught children's Sunday school classes and sang in the choir most of her life and raised her daughters to follow in her footsteps.

Next to God and her family, she loved gardening most. She was never happier than when she had her hands in the dirt, coaxing beauty from the soil.

Surviving are her husband, James Oscar Hall; children, Marsha Hall Presson and Russ, Lana Hall Nicely and Wayne, Eric R. Hall and Patricia; sister, Lillian Smith (Orville); four grandchildren, Justin Thomas Presson, Victoria Jeanette Presson Gordon, Clennon James Presson, Jonathan Holden Presson; five great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, October 29, 2018 at the Harrison Funeral Chapel by Dr. Greg Gertz and the Rev. Jesse Krystowiak. Burial will follow at Collierstown Presbyterian Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, October 28, 2018 at Harrison Funeral Home.

Memorial ontributions may be made to Rockbridge Area Hospice, 315 Myers Street, Lexington, VA 24450, Lexington Fire and Rescue, 708 S. Main Street, Lexington, VA 24450 or Effinger Fire and Rescue, 2824 Collierstown Road, Lexington, VA 24450.
