Obituary for Grover L. Ramsey Sr. Grover L. Ramsey Sr.
Logger, Woodsman Dies At Age 89

Mr. Grover L. Ramsey Sr. went to his sleep on Sunday morning, November 11, 2018, surrounded by his seven children and many of his grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 38 years, Nannie Tomlin Ramsey, and his parents, William M. Ramsey and Clarice "Jobe" Tyler Ramsey of Amherst County; and mother-in-law, Hallie Staton Tomlin. He was the second born of 12 children.

He is survived by his seven children, Nancy Brown (John) of Lexington, Virginia; Patty Napier (Mike), Wilma Beck, Frances Tomlin (Glenn), Grover "Pete" Ramsey (Debbie), Lesa Solomon (Raymond and Bill), and Cindy Turner (Jay), all of Amherst County. He is also survived by 18 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren; and special friend, Andy Hurren.

He is also survived by two brothers, Delmas Ramsey (Alice) and Lawrence (Donna), and one sister, Maggie Smith. Eight siblings preceded him in death: three brothers, William, Sam and Roy Lee; and five sisters, Rosa, Lillian, Alice, Barbara and Daisy.

Grover was a logger and woodsman for most of his 89 years. He loved his mountain home and his pet dogs. He enjoyed farming, raising cattle and growing a garden that he shared with family and friends. He was also fond of hunting and fishing. One of his many talents was that of storytelling, sharing how he grew up during the Great Depression and World War II, surviving his childhood years by the assistance from the Oronoco Civilian Conservation Corps. His stories spoke of hardship and perseverance that taught his family character building traits such as honesty, integrity, hard work, and the need for an education. He was greatly loved by all who knew him.

He was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Buena Vista. He was a man of strong faith and belief in Jesus Christ as his personal savior. His church family and friends were very important to him.

Our family wishes to extend words of gratitude to Dr. Michael Valentine, Lynchburg Cardiology, and Dr. William Sayre of Lexington for their excellent health care for our father over the years and genuine compassion for his well-being. Thank you to the Rockbridge Area Hospice for teaching us how to care for Dad during his final days and hours, especially over the weekend making several trips to provide medicine and guidance. Our family greatly appreciates your support and professional counsel.

The Ramsey family will receive friends on Thursday, November 15, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Bolling, Grose & Lotts Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, November 16, 2018 at 11 a.m. at Bolling, Grose and Lotts Funeral Chapel with Pastor Jeff Taylor and Pastor Bob Banks officiating. Interment will be at the Oronoco Brethren Church. A meal will follow the service at the Buena Vista Seventh Day Adventist Church.

Arrangements are being handled by Bolling, Grose, & Lotts Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Buena Vista.
