Obituary for Frances Bailey Brooke Frances Bailey Brooke
Sweet Briar College Graduate Was Active In Her Community

Frances Bailey Brooke of Lexington, Va., passed away at her home on Tuesday, December 18, 2018.

She was born in Clinton, S.C. on June 7, 1917 to William Cyrus and Marion Fleming Bailey.

She was predeceased by her parents, her sister, Florence B. Adams; her husband, George M. Brooke Jr.; her son, George M. Brooke III and her son-in-law, J. Robert Philpott Jr.

She is survived by her daughter, Marion Philpott Carson and husband, Charles, her daughter-in-law, Jane Leech Brooke, five grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Brooke was a 1938 graduate of Sweet Briar College, serving for many years as the class agent. She was a proud alumna and was honored in 2017, when she represented the classes of the 1930's at the induction of its new President.

She was a true southern lady. Mrs. Brooke was a member of the Garden Club of Virginia, the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America in the state of Virginia and the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Since moving to Lexington in 1947, Mrs. Brooke served twice as the President of the Blue Ridge Garden Club and Regent of the Frontier Chapter, NSDAR. She was a devoted, faithful, and active member of R. E. Lee Memorial Episcopal Church (now Grace Episcopal Church) and was active in other civic minded duties. She was a great supporter of Presbyterian College and Thornwell Orphanage, both founded by her great-grandfather, Dr. William Plumer Jacobs.

Services will be held at Grace Episcopal Church at 2 p.m. Friday, January 4, 2019. In lieu of flowers the family suggests that any donations may be made to Grace Episcopal Church, 123 W. Washington Street, Lexington, Va., 24450; Sweet Briar College, 134 Chapel Road, Sweet Briar, Va. 24595 or Presbyterian College, 503 S. Broad Street, Clinton, S.C., 29325.
