Obituary for Carlene Putnam Mays Carlene Putnam Mays
Bath County Native Was Nurse, Pianist

On Sunday, December 23, 2018 Carlene Putnam Mays of Daleville Virginia, loving mother of three children, six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, passed away at the age of 82.

Carlene was born in Bath County, Virginia on June 14, 1936 to Raymond Putnam and Pauline Putnam McGuire.

She graduated in 1953 from Central High school in Clifton Forge. She attended nursing school at C&O hospital in Clifton Forge.

In 1956, she married Sidney Mays and they raised three sons, Mark, David and Jeff.

Carlene had a passion for music, especially classical. She was a beautiful pianist. Her personality was big. She had immeasurable charisma along with a warm smile and wonderful sense of humor. Most who met Carlene never forgot her. She never met a stranger. Carlene had a great sense of compassion and spoke out for those less fortunate. She loved the beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains and Virginia.

Carlene was preceded in death by her husband, Owen S. Mays, Jr. and son, David Mays; two sisters, Mary Elizabeth and Jacquelyn and her adored sister-in-law, Susie Mays.

She is survived by her sons Mark and Jeff; her grandchildren, Jacob, Amanda, Joshua, Michael, Jake (Dusty) and Melinda; great-grandchildren, Brandon, Nathen, Rowen and Isaac; brothers, Bill and Alton; special friends, Jennifer Mays and Logan Terry, in addition to many cousins, nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held Nicely Funeral Home in Clifton Forge, Virginia on Thursday, December 27, 2018 at 2 p.m. A visitation will occur from 12:30 p.m. until 2 p.m. prior to the funeral service.
