Obituary for Dorothy (Dot) (Mrs. Dot) (MeeMaw) Smith Dorothy (Dot) (Mrs. Dot) (MeeMaw) Smith
Fairfield United Methodist Church Member Was Also Senior Citizens Director

Dorothy (Dot) (Mrs. Dot) (MeeMaw) Smith passed away January 20, 2019 at Augusta Health.

Born March 1, 1930, she was a daughter of the late Eula Lee and L.E. Vaughan of Alvarado, Virginia.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by "The Love of Her Life" and husband of 60 years, Jack F. Smith, mother and father-in-law, Mima B. and C. G. Smith of Fairfield, who loved her like a daughter; brothers, Jack and Charles Vaughan; sister, Mary (James) Pennington and special brother and sister, J.P Jones and Doris Jones.

Surviving are sons, Bobby Smith of Fairfield, and Richard "Dickie" Smith (Cindy) of Butler, Tenn.; grandsons, Jason Smith (Ashley) and children, Levi and Luke of Fairfield, Travis Smith (Shelli) and children, Eli, Weston, and Corbi, of Butler, Tenn., and her "other son" and friend, Jimmy Fortune. Also surviving are sisters, Virginia Williamson (Henry), Ann Pierce (Dan); brother, Jerry Vaughan and friend, Shirley, and special niece, Barbara, who flew all the way from California to visit and help every year.

Special thanks to friend and caregiver, Margie Hartless for her many years of help through the good, and the difficult times. Thanks also to Alice Hartless, Marty Thompson Debbie Knick, Hospice, and Augusta Health.

When people spoke of Dorothy (MeeMaw), the first statement that usually came out was how sweet she was. In her high school autograph book the majority of her class mates said "Stay Sweet," or "You are the sweetest person I know." She was kind to everyone, and never had a bad word to say; she treated everyone fairly and equally.

Biscuits, Rolls, and Corn Bread! There may be some as good, but there was never anyone that baked better bread. Her bread has been highly missed the last few years by family and friends.

Dorothy was director of the Fairfield Senior Citizens from 1976 to 2004. Seniors came from all over, and she kept them busy with quilt making, arts and crafts, and pot luck dinners. Raffle tickets for the quilts, and the sale of arts and crafts at the extremely successful Fall Bazaar helped pay for the trips the group took to the World's Fair in Nashville, Niagara Falls, Glass Factories in Ohio, and many other destinations. She somehow planned and oversaw these highly looked forward to trips.

Dorothy was also a Sunday school teacher for many years at Fairfield United Methodist Church and home room mother and P.T.A member at Fairfield Elementary School for many years.

She will be missed by friends and relatives.

The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, January 24, 2019 at Harrison Funeral Chapel with Pastor Mike Puffenbarger officiating. Burial will follow at Fairfield Cemetery.

Friends may gather with the family from 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, January 23 at Harrison Funeral Home and after the burial at Fairfield Methodist Church social hall.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Fairfield Cemetery, c\o Kennan and Martha Campbell, 3428 Borden Grant Trail, Fairfield, VA 24435.

Arrangements are by Harrison Funeral Home & Crematory.
