Vietnam Veteran, Forest Supervisor Dies At Age 74

Ronald David Swann, age 74, of 126 Falcon Ridge Road, Clifton Forge, Virginia died Sunday, January 27, 2019 in Clifton Forge.

He was born November 29, 1944 in Asheville, North Carolina to the late Jeanette Davis Swann.

He was a Forest Supervisor for the U. S. National Forest Service and avid hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed reading, especially history, and working out at the YMCA.

He graduated from the University of Georgia. Then, at the height of the Vietnam War, completed Officer Candidate School, and attended U. S. Army Jump School and Ranger School, before completing two tours of duty in Vietnam, where he received a Purple Heart. He retired from the United States Army as Lieutenant Colonel and was a member of the Curtis A. Smith Post 1033 Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth Grier Swann; a son, Eric Swann and a granddaughter, Evie Swann, all of Clifton Forge.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, January 30, 2019 at 6:00 p.m. in the chapel of Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge, with Reverend Mike Warren officiating. The family will receive friends on Wednesday evening from 5:00 p.m. until the time of service at Nicely Funeral Home.

A graveside funeral service will take place on Friday at 12:00 noon in Pisgah United Methodist Church Cemetery in Candler, North Carolina. Military honors will be conducted at the graveside.
