Well-Known Clifton Forge Businessman Was Korean War Marine Corps Veteran, Active Mason

Chalmer Louis (Hank) Via, age 86, of 932 Acacia Street, Clifton Forge, Virginia died Thursday, February 14, 2019 at LewisGale Hospital – Alleghany, Low Moor.

Hank was born June 20, 1932 in Clifton Forge to the late Chalmer Rucker Via and Sarah Louis Vermillion Via.

He served in the United States Marine Corps for four years during the Korean War, and was the former owner/operator of the Alleghany Campground on Wilson Creek and the Dairy Bar in Clifton Forge, for many years, and was Assistant Manager for the A & P Grocery Store in Clifton Forge for a number of years.

He was a member of the Clifton Forge Masonic Lodge # 166 A.F. & A.M., the Kazim Temple of Roanoke, the Royal Order of Jesters Court # 59 of Roanoke, the Clifton Forge Shrine Club, the Clifton Forge Elks Lodge #1065, and Griffith Knob Hunt Club.

Hank loved hunting, golf, cooking and was an avid University of Virginia fan.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Kay Toney Via and a sister, Patsy Dyer.

He is survived by two sons, Gregory Louis Via and wife, Vicki of Boston, MA, Todd Franklin Via and wife, Amy of Valley Ridge, Covington; two sisters, Nancy Norvell and Peggy Evans, both of Manassas; three grandchildren, Kristin Via of New York, and Dylan Via and Kara Via, both of Valley Ridge, Covington; and a number of nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held on Sunday, February 17, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge, with Mr. Glenn Jones officiating. Interment will be private at Mountain View Cemetery, Clifton Forge at a later date.

The family will receive friends on Saturday evening from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Nicely Funeral Home. Masonic Rites will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. by members Clifton Forge Masonic Lodge #166 A.F & A.M. The family suggests memorial tributes take the form of contributions to Shriners Hospitals for Children.
