Harvey Franklin Chittum, Jr., age 91, of 4492 W. Midland Trail, Lexington, Virginia passed away Tuesday, February 19, 2019 in Rockbridge County.

He was born May 14, 1927 in Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital, Lexington, a son of the late Harvey Franklin Chittum, Sr. and Lula Virginia Gaylor Chittum.

He graduated from Clifton Forge High School in 1944.

He was a member of the Lexington Baptist Church and was a veteran of World War II, having served in the United States Air Force in the Pacific Theater, attached to the 7th Air Force.

He was a member of the Clifton Forge Masonic Lodge # 166 A.F. & A.M. for a number of years, the Scottish Rite Bodies, Kazim Temple of Roanoke, and the Clifton Forge Shrine Club.

He was a retired owner/operator of Chittum Goodyear Tire Service and was a distributor for B. P. Oil Company of Clifton Forge. He drove for Virginia Trailways during the 1950's.

He loved his woodworking shop and made many things out of wood, but also loved farming, working in his garden, and hunting.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Michael Stephen "Steve" Chittum, and by a sister, Margery Myers.

Mr. Chittum is survived by his wife, Cicely "Sandy" Kemp Chittum of Lexington, whom he married on October 22nd 1955. They were married 63 years. Also surviving is a son, Robert Wendell Chittum and wife, Natalia of Lexington; a sister, Maxine Chittum of Staunton; one niece and one nephew; and a lot of treasured cousins and friends.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, February 22, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge, with Reverend W. Pembroke Hall, Pastor Michael Saunders, and Pastor Michael Wilburn officiating. Interment will follow at a later date in Kerrs Creek Baptist Church Cemetery, Rockbridge County. Pallbearers will be Jimmy Knick, Mike Bogan, Roscoe Irvine, Toby Sorrels, Donald Allen, Lenny Crance, and Randy Hostetter.

The family will visit with friends on Thursday evening from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Nicely Funeral Home.

The family suggests memorial tributes take the form of contributions to Shriners Hospitals for Children, 2900 North Rocky Point Drive, Tampa, FL 33607.
