95 Year-Old Florida Native Was Lexington Resident

Kathryn Lyons Whitaker, 95, of Lexington, Virginia formerly of West Palm Beach, Florida, died Thursday, February 14, 2019 in her home surrounded by loved ones.

Born February 22, 1923 in Florida, she was the daughter of the late John and Bessie Lyons.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas A. Whitaker III, her grandson Zachary Amsden, and son-in-law, William Torrence.

Surviving are her daughters, Mary Martin, Barbara Peck, and Virginia Wade (Michael) and her son, Thomas Whitaker IV (Kathleen), ten grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

She was a graduate of Pahokie High School and attended Principia College. She proudly served in the Navy for the duration of World War II.

Upon her retirement at age 72, she held the record for the longest serving employee of the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office.

She was an active member of various organizations, including the Order of the Eastern Star, Zem Zem Court of the Ladies of the Oriental Shrine, where she was Past High Priestess, Aquarius Temple with Daughters of the Nile and the Red Hat Society.

A private viewing was held at Harrison Funeral Home & Crematory. Services will be held at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
