Former Clifton Forge Resident Dies At Age 71

Merrell Lee Witt, born September 5, 1947 in Dawson, West Virginia to the late Lester and Irene McClung Witt, passed away at age 71 on Sunday, March 17, 2019 in Tampa, Florida.

Merrell served in the 811th ordinance Army Reserve and he retired from United Parcel Service as a feeder driver.

Merrell was the loving husband of 50 years to Donna Cadle Witt. Merrell and Donna lived and raised their family in Covington and Clifton Forge, Virginia before moving to Grassy Meadows, WV, near where they were both born and raised.

Merrell was preceded in death by his son, Mark Wayne Witt; and brothers, Glen Orel, Lester Dale, and Carl Ray and his wife, Ann Patterson Witt.

In addition to his loving wife, he is survived by his son, Andy Witt and wife, Maria of Grassy Meadows, WV; daughters, Melody Weese and husband, Davey of Clifton Forge, VA; Dodie Gutcher and husband, Vic of Virginia Beach, VA; his brother, Roe Edwin "Buddie" Witt and wife, Edna of Lecanto, FL; sister, Carol Westcott and husband, Clarence of Yorktown, VA; sister-in-law Jenny Witt of Troy, MO; grandchildren, Kaylee Witt, Eli Weese, Ryan Dovel, Robert Zimmers, Garrit Gutcher, Madison Gutcher; and great-grandson, Remy Dovel. He is also survived by a large and loving extended family of Witts, Cadles and friends, both by blood and by choice. He was blessed by numerous nephews and nieces he loved as his own children.

Merrell treasured his family, friends and the precious gift of music. According to his wishes, Merrell's body was donated for the research of Polycythemia Vera and Blastomycosis.

No formal funeral services are planned. Friends and family may pay their respects at a Celebration of Life on Friday, July 5, any time between the hours of 3:00 to 11:00 p.m. at The Cadle Farm, Grassy Meadows, West Virginia.

Music, food, love and memories will be shared to commemorate a life well lived. His gentle spirit, his tender heart and infectious smile will be remembered always.
