Former Hercules Purchasing Manager Dies At Age 85

George Benjamin Filer, 85, of 6011 Potts Creek Road, Covington, Virginia died Thursday, April 4, 2019 at his home.

Mr. Filer was born January 15, 1934 in Midlothian, Maryland, a son of the late Benjamin and Hanna Davies Filer.

He was a veteran of the U. S. Army. He retired in 1991 as the Purchasing Manager for the former Hercules, Inc. plant.

He was a member of Pinnell Chapel United Methodist Church, Covington Lodge #171 AF& AM, the Clifton Forge Shrine Club, the Scottish Rite and Kazim Temple. He was a former member of the Boiling Springs Fire Department and Rescue Squad. He was a licensed pilot who loved to fly and enjoyed playing golf.

Surviving are his wife of 61 years, Jane Hearn Filer of Covington; his son and daughter-in-law, George Filer, Jr. and Regina of Bluefield; his daughter and son-in-law, Valerie and Gratten Hepler of Covington; five grandchildren, Delbert Gratten Hepler, III and his wife, Lindsey of Boston, MA; Captain George Benjamin Hepler and his wife, Kaeleigh of Quantico; Brian Filer of Tennessee, Keith Filer of Bluefield, WV, and Mark Filer and his wife, Delyn of Tennessee; great grandson, Talon Filer of Bluefield, WV; one brother, Charles Filer and his wife, Jean of Maryland; three sisters, Lois Lewis and her husband, Marvin of New York, Rosalie Doty of Arizona and Betty Knotts of Maryland; and a number of nieces and nephews.

In keeping with his wishes, his body has been cremated.

The funeral service will be held Thursday, April 11, 2019 at 1:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Arritt Funeral Home.

Interment will be made in Lone Star Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Delbert Gratten Hepler, III and Captain George Benjamin Hepler.

The family will receive their friends for one hour before the service at Arritt Funeral Home. The family suggests that donations in Mr. Filer's name be made to the Boiling Springs Fire Department and Rescue Squad, 5407 Potts Creek Road, Covington, VA 24426 or to Mountain Regional Hospice, P. O. Box 637, Clifton Forge, VA 24422.
