Obituary for Cecil Edna Green Chittum Jean Proctor Robinson
Bath County Native Loved Music, Genealogy, Gardening

Jean Proctor Robinson, 93, passed away peacefully at home on April 13, 2019.

Her husband of nearly 70 years, John Shields Robinson, predeceased her on February 14, 2013.

Jean was born on March 3, 1926 on the family farm in Bath County to Ashby Gibson Proctor and Edith Bowman Proctor.

She loved farm life and spending time outdoors, never outgrowing her tomboy tendency.

After high school, she worked for the Census Bureau in Washington, D.C., during World War II.

On Christmas Eve 1943, she married 2nd Lt John S. Robinson and moved to Harrisonburg.

Jean was beautiful, vivacious, and had a curious adventuresome soul. Her love of music infused her whole life, and she taught her children to sing in 4 part harmony from a very early age. Her joy was shared with the Lexington Presbyterian Church choir and congregation for well over 50 years.

Jean had a deep respect for honoring her family history and that of others, as well. She belonged to the UDC, DAR and APVA, and was thorough in doing genealogical work for others.

Maintaining the gardens with other hardworking friends at the Stonewall Jackson House brought her deep satisfaction. Her gardening talents are evident in lawns of folks all over the county who were gifted with generous starts from her many specimens.

Surviving are her children, Suzy Jones (Jim), Gail Coppock (Dave), John M. Robinson, Nancy Trimble (Bo), and Norma Jean Burns (Jerry); grandchildren, Courtney Harjung (Tom), James A. Jones V, Whitney Allen (Michael), Austin Coppock (Kait), Steve Coppock, Ashley Robinson, Ariana Robinson, Patrick Sheridan, John Sheridan, Will Jones, and Leah Pinkard (Kipp). Also, great-granddaughters, Molly Pinkard and Margaret Allen; and a sister, Norma Lanier (Bill) and family, Pete Smith and family, extended family and a host of dear friends.

Special thanks to her devoted physicians, who kept her with us this long: Zeke Ellington and John Sheridan and also her devoted caregiver, Bonnie, and Hospice nurse, Karen.

Donations may be made to either Rockbridge Area Health Center or Rockbridge Area Hospice.

A memorial service and following reception in Dunlap Auditorium will be held at Lexington Presbyterian Church on Saturday, April 20, 2019 at 1 p.m.
