Marian Inga Carlson, 89, of Lexington, Virginia, died Saturday, May 25, 2019 at Kendal of Lexington.

She was born July 17, 1929 in Chicago, Ill., a daughter of the late Ivar Carlson and Eleanor Nilson Carlson.

Marian graduated from North Park College, Chicago in 1952, was married that summer, then did secretarial work until her husband finished graduate school at Northwestern University. They moved to Lexington in 1961, when her husband joined the VMI faculty.

Marian enjoyed reading, gardening, entertaining, travel, volunteering, and occasional part-time work at W&L.

She is survived by Allan, her husband of 67 years; sister, Vivian Palmer, and husband, Gorden of Chicago; nieces, Pat Thorsen and husband, Michael, Sue Judson and husband, Gary, all of Chicago; nephew, David Palmer and wife, Michelle of Nashville.

To honor Marian's wishes, there will be no funeral services. Memorial contributions may be made in her name to The Kendal Staff Appreciation Fund, 170 Kendal Dr., Lexington, Va. 24450 or Rockbridge Area Hospice, 315 Myers Street, Lexington, Va. 24450.
