Obituary for Julia Lewis Smith Martin Julia Lewis Smith Martin
Lifelong Lexington Resident Was Former VMI Public Information Officer

Julia Lewis Smith Martin, a lifelong resident of Lexington, Virginia died June 10, 2019 at her South Main Street home with family by her side.

A retiree from Virginia Military Institute in December 1989, she served for 40 years as the Assistant Public Information Officer and was a noted source for information on the college's history and its alumni. She was also a charter recipient in 1982 of VMI's Distinguished Service Award.

Known since high school as Julie, she was a 1948 graduate of James Madison University, then Madison College, where she was class president. She was the only child of the late Reid Houston Smith and Julia Blair Lewis Smith, with her Rockbridge County ancestors among the area's early settlers.

She is survived by her beloved daughter, Blair Martin Williams and husband, Preston M. Williams of Lexington; two adored grandchildren, Macon Blair Williams Worsley and husband, Mark C. Worsley of Richmond, Maury Lyle Williams and partner, Georgina K. Doyle of Keswick; as well as three great granddaughters, Susannah Blair Worsley, Lennox Kay Doyle and Levi Mackey Williams.

In addition to her family, survivors include a special group of college friends known as the "The Mad Girls of '48", whose close friendship has endured since their graduation from Madison more than six decades ago.

The family will receive visitors Friday, June 21, 2019 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Harrison Funeral Home and Crematory, with services being held at Manly Memorial Baptist Church on Saturday, June 22, 2019 at 11 a.m.
