Retired Homestead Bellman Dies At Age 87

Willie Henry Leverette, (known to many as Willycat and Jose), 87, of Covington, Virginia was called home to be with his Heavenly Father on Tuesday, June 18, 2019 at Lewis-Gale Medical Center in Salem, Virginia.

Mr. Leverette was born in Greenville, South Carolina, a son of the late Charlie and Lois Leverette.

In addition to his parents, he preceded in death by his wife, Doris Roman Leverette; one brother, Charlie Leverette, Jr., and three sisters, Ruth Bristow, Marie Moore, and Mary Black.

He was a graduate from Dunbar High School in Lexington, North Carolina, where we was member of the glee club and football team. He was musically talented and received a musical scholarship for voice. With life-long physical impairments, it never let that define him.

He was a devoted husband and had a passionate love for his family. He was a retired bellman at The Homestead for many years. As a man of strong faith, Mr. Leverette was a member of Pine Street Baptist Church serving the Lord in singing in the church choir.

Surviving his daughter Jean Roman of Lexington, NC; two sons, Horace Roman (Wanda) of Lexington, NC and Donald Roman of Lewisburg, WV; two sisters, Olivia Stringer of San Diego, CA and Fleda Ann Kirby (Robert) of Charlotte, NC; two brothers, Joe Leverette of Newark, NJ and Gordon Donovan of Richmond, VA; four grandchildren, Nikita Vinson of Lexington, NC, Robert "Dusty" Roman of Charleston, WV, Corey Roman of Winston-Salem, NC, and Alvin Roman and fiancée Keisha Jordan of Covington, VA; ten great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; and was vblessed with many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

The family would like to express its gratitude to the caregivers and medical staff with Lewis-Gale Alleghany and Salem Hospitals and Bath County Community Hospital. Also, a special thanks to the Pine Street Baptist Church family for its compassion and support.

The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, June 25, 2019 at 1:00 p.m. at Pine Street Baptist Church with Reverend Thomas Harper officiating. The family will receive friends at 12 noon at Pine Street Baptist Church.
