Rockbridge County Native Was Natural Bridge Station Resident

Winston Brownlee Tolley, 77, of Natural Bridge Station, Virginia died peacefully at his home on Tuesday, June 18, 2019.

The seventh of nine children of the late Charles Lloyd Tolley and Elizabeth Barger Tolley, Brownlee was born on June 21, 1941 in Rockbridge County.

He was predeceased by his sisters, Jeanne Tolley Bourne and Susan Tolley, and two brothers, Charles Preston (Bill) Tolley and Carl Tolley.

He is survived by Gayle Figgers Tolley, his wife of 53 years; a son, Justin Brownlee Tolley of Nashville; a daughter, Suzanne Tolley of Roanoke; two brothers, Edward Tolley of Buchanan and Stephen Tolley (Kim) of Elkmont, Ala.; two sisters, Nancy Hostetter of Lexington and Doris Trussell (Bill) of Fairfax; numerous nieces, nephews and many special relatives and friends.

Brownlee served in the United States Air Force from 1961 to 1965. He was employed as general manager of Natural Bridge of Virginia and at the Virginia Military Institute as construction contracting officer. He was a skilled musician, electrician, carpenter and mason, and enjoyed working on his homeplace in retirement.

He was a lifetime member of High Bridge Presbyterian Church, serving as a deacon; and a member of Glasgow Masonic Lodge, having served as Worshipful Master as well as secretary for many years.

The family invites friends for a visitation at Harrison Funeral Home on Thursday, June 20, 2019 from 5 to 7 p.m. The service of Witness to the Resurrection will occur at High Bridge on Friday, June 21, at 6 p.m. with the Rev. Jason Grimes officiating.

The family suggests in lieu of flowers that memorial donations be made to Building Fund or Scholarship Fund, High Bridge Presbyterian Church, 67 High Bridge Church Road, Natural Bridge, VA. 24578.
