Obituary for James Francis (Jim) Corrington James Francis (Jim) Corrington
Well-Known Lexington Artist Was Virginia Tech Graduate

James Francis (Jim) Corrington passed away in Lexington, Virginia on June 23, 2019 at the age of 57.

Jim was born in Evanston, Ill., on his mother's 30th birthday, September 29, 1961. He spent the first years of his life in Northfield, Ill., until his parents moved the family to Greenwich, Conn., in 1969. It was in Connecticut that Jim first developed his love of architecture, drawing pictures of houses inspired by those he saw in magazines. He was the star player of an undefeated Greenwich Country Day School basketball team where he earned the nickname "Bones."

In 1978 the family moved again, this time to Lexington. Jim graduated from Lexington High School in 1980 and went on to Virginia Tech where he studied art, architecture and history, graduating in 1985 with a BA in history. After graduation he remained in Blacksburg for several years.

Jim never had interest in a traditional career path and instead pursued his passion for art. His paintings were inspired by his love of architecture, the waters of northern Michigan's Lake Charlevoix and the beaches along the gulf coast of Florida where he traveled frequently.

After several years working out of his studio in Blacksburg, he returned to Lexington where he painted in his home studio on Myers Street. He sold many of his stunning and unique paintings at art shows around Virginia and his work was regularly displayed at the Artists in Cahoots gallery in Lexington. His paintings continue to grace the walls of many friends, family members and collectors. Jim also loved music and played a variety of instruments including guitar, mandolin and harmonica.

Jim met Susan Virginia Mead of Lexington in 1982 and they were married on July 6, 1985. While the marriage ended five years later, they maintained respect, affection and contact over the years.

He leaves behind fond memories as a good and kind friend with a quick wit and a gentle smile who embraced his artistic passions every day.

Jim is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Richard F. Corrington Jr. and Debra Corrington of Lexington; his brother, William B. Corrington of Reston; and his sister, Frances Corrington of Frankfort, Ky.

He was predeceased by his parents, Richard F. Corrington and Frances B. Corrington, both of Lexington.

There is no memorial service planned.

Arrangements are by Harrison Funeral Home & Crematory.
