Obituary for Dr. Mary Litts Burton Dr. Mary LItts Burton
Well-Known Local Educator Dies At Age 80

Dr. Mary LItts Burton, age 80, of 403 Pine Street, Clifton Forge, Virginia, on July 22, 2019 at Brightview at Baldwin Park in Staunton, went peacefully to the Lord and her Heavenly home.

Mary Litts was born to Thelma Hinebaugh Burton and Clarence Albert Burton, Sr. on December 18, 1938 at the Chesapeake and Ohio Hospital in Clifton Forge.

She was a lifelong resident of the City/Town of Clifton Forge. She attended Clifton Forge Schools and graduated as Salutatorian of the Class of 1957.

She attended and graduated from Madison College where she met many of her lifelong friends. She earned a Masters Degree from the University of Virginia and a Doctorate Degree from Virginia Tech.

Mary Litts began her career in education as a teacher in Alleghany County at Central High School and moved to Alleghany High School when it opened. She worked as a teacher and administrator there and moved to the Central Office for many years working with her favorite mentor, Dr. Mark Pace.

Mary Litts was a Virginia Tech fan, loved all animals (especially butterflies), flowers and gardening. She loved her Lord and was active in The First Christian Church where she served on the finance committee and as a trustee.

She was a member of the National Education Association, the Virginia Education Association, the Delta Kappa Gamma womens education sorority, the Mary LItts Burton Middle School Honor Society, and the Alleghany Retired Teachers.

She is survived by two brothers, George T. Burton of Winter Springs, FL and C. A. Burton, Jr. and his wife, Maureen of Staunton. Also surviving are two nephews, Tripp Burton and Todd Burton. She and her family would like to thank all of the caregivers at her home, The Brian Center and Brightview at Baldwin Park who attended to her needs.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, July 26, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge, with Mr. James David Williams officiating. Interment will follow in Mountain View Cemetery, Clifton Forge. Pallbearers will be selected from friends and family attending the service. The family will receive friends on Friday afternoon from 12:30 p.m. until the time of service at Nicely Funeral Home.

The family suggests memorial tributes take the form of contributions to the Alzheimer’s Association or to the Alleghany Humane Society.
