Lurty Edward Fifer Jr. passed away in Lexington, Virginia on April 3, 2019.
Mr. Fifer was born April 2, 1931, the son of Lurty Edward Fifer Sr. and Carrie Wease Fifer.
After enlisting in the Air Force in 1952, and later working as manager for the Civic Bowling Center in Lexington for his brother, Roland L. Fifer.
Lurty spent 30-plus years as a layout engineer for Simpson Brothers Construction Company, a commercial builder in Northern Virginia.
Lurty peacefully lived his last six years of retirement at the Mayflower, in Lexington.
Lurty was an avid golfer who played virtually year-round while living in Alexandria and working for Simpson. Only snow and the lack of playing partners could keep him from the golf course. Known as "Gentleman Lou" to those at the Pinecrest course in Annandale and the Marlboro Country Club in Marlboro, Md., Lurty was highly respected for his honesty, integrity, and generosity among all who knew him. His Fifer relatives knew him as Uncle June, or Uncle JuJu, and his love and generosity toward them was boundless.
Lurty also enjoyed playing poker, and would take an occasional trip to Biloxi, Mississippi, or Las Vegas, Nevada, during his winter construction break and early retirement years.
Despite his time in the Air Force, Mr. Fifer avoided planes on his personal travel, and chose instead to drive everywhere he went, staying at small motels all across the country. Home-cooked meals were his favorite, and he could "hold his own" at the dinner table. There were no scraps left on Lurty Fifer's plate.
Mr. Fifer was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Roland.
He is survived by his niece, Sandra Leigh Fifer, and two nephews, Roland E. Fifer and Stephen B. Fifer. He is also survived by five great-nieces, Jennifer Fifer Thompson, Kristin Flora Garber, Allison M. Fifer, Audrey E. Fifer, and Anna C. Fifer; two great-nephews, Michael E. Fifer, and Matthew S. Fifer; and five great-great-nieces and three great-great-nephews.
A private memorial service and celebration of Lurty Fifer's life will be held by the family at a later time.
