Obituary for Paul Thomas Mulcahy Paul Thomas Mulcahy
Covington Resident Was World War II Veteran, Radio Personality, Journalist, Accomplished Drummer

On Thursday, August 8, 2019, surrounded by three generations of his loving family, Paul Thomas Mulcahy, of 401 Piney Ridge Road, Covington, Virginia joined Jesus and his beloved wife, Paula, in Heaven. He was 94 years old.

Paul was born in Worcester, MA on December 23, 1924 to the late Thomas and Margaret (Ayers) Mulcahy.

A deeply faithful person since childhood, he believed he was meant for the priesthood, and spent his high school years at the La Salette Seminary in Hartford, CT.

After graduation, he was accepted into their Novitiate, but World War II intervened. In 1944, as a part of the 129th regiment of the U .S. Army's 83rd Division, Paul shipped out to Europe. In his memoir, he described his moment of embarkation on the troop transport the SS Wakefield like this: "I was off to my destiny - not to kill or be killed, but to eventually meet the girl who was to become my wife and lifetime partner."

Paul met the love of his life, Paula Szpynda, at General George S. Patton's headquarters in Bad Tolz, Germany, where she worked. They were married in Worcester, MA on October 25, 1947, and their only child, a son - Leo Thomas Mulcahy, was born one year later.

In his working life, Paul was a Worcester, MA radio personality until moving to Yonkers, NY in 1961, where he became a reporter and writer for several New York City newspapers. When he retired in 1988, he'd been a writer and editor for Metropolitan Life Insurance Company for over two decades. He and Paula moved to Covington, VA in 2005 to be closer to family.

In his personal time, in addition to being an avid celebrant of St. Patrick's Day, and an occasional connoisseur of Jameson Irish Whiskey, Paul was an accomplished drummer. In his younger years, he played in a variety of small orchestras and other musical groups in Worcester, MA. Later in life, he continued to diligently practice on the same drum set he purchased in 1947 and was always excited about the improvements he was making.

Paul lived his life in service to God, his wife, and his family. His kindness, his morals, his gentle values, and his example of what it means to live one's life as a good person will be his durable legacy. We will miss him so very much.

He is survived by his son, Leo, and wife, Heide, of Covington; three grandchildren: Erin, and husband, Jim, of Roundup, MT and Fairbanks, AK, Laura, and husband, Tetteh, of Brooklyn, NY, and Brian, and wife, Elizabeth of Charlottesville, VA; and four great-grandchildren: Aurora Dawn, Anya Norley, August Franklin, and Ponyo Paula. He is also survived by a number of loving in-laws, cousins, nieces, nephews, and a host of longtime friends.

He was predeceased by his wife of 67 years, Paula; his parents, and his brother, Leo Bernard Mulcahy, as well as a number of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, August 12, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father Augustine Lukenge and Father Tom Collins as celebrants

. The family will receive friends on Sunday evening from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Loving Funeral Home in Covington.
