William (Ross) Hefner, 85, of Monterey, Virginia passed away Wednesday, August 21, 2019 at Augusta Health.

He was born January 20, 1934 in Mill Gap, a son to the late Otis John and Annie Margaret (Sheets) Hefner.

Mr. Hefner served honorably in the United States Marines Corps and was both a veteran and P.O.W. of the Korean War.

In addition to raising cattle, Ross was employed with Dominion Power, where he worked as scale operator and laborer prior to his retirement.

An avid horseman and farrier, Ross loved all things related to horses, a love shared by his step-granddaughter, Caitlin. Additionally, Ross enjoyed bear hunting, and caring for his hounds and stock dogs. When not tending to his livestock or patching fences, he could be found visiting and joking with folks at Gutshall's Exxon. Above all, Ross will be remembered to his family and community as a kind and selfless man, who was always available to help those in need.

In addition to his parents he was predeceased by two brothers, James L. and John A. Hefner and a sister, Shirley Buchanan.

Surviving are his wife of 33 years, Elizabeth "Bobbie" Hiner Hefner of Monterey; two daughters, Brenda Lee Hefner of Churchville and Barbara Ann Hefner of Petersburg, WV; son, William "Billy" Ross Hefner Jr. of Monterey; grandchildren, Elizabeth Alexandria and Aaron Trawick Swecker of Churchville and Christopher Scott Hefner of Petersburg, WV; step-children, Kimberly Clift and husband, John of Charlotte, N.C. and Jesse and Carol Swecker of Monterey; step-grandchildren, Benjamin Swecker of Charlotte, N.C., Caitlin Swecker of Blacksburg and Jason Clift of Charlotte, N.C.; sisters, Charlotte Mullenax of Gloucester and Mary Ellen Hull of Doe Hill; as well as son-in-law, Tim Swecker of Swoope.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, August 26, 2019 in Monterey Cemetery with Rev. Andre Crummett officiating.

The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Sunday, August 25 at the funeral home, as well as following the service at the home of Ross and Bobbie.

Active pallbearers will be Tim Swecker, Dylan Ingram, Benjamin Swecker, Marc Herold, Jimmie Will, John Hamburg, Aaron Swecker, Eugene Ratcliffe.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be sent to Monterey Cemetery, c/o Nancy Sweitzer, 228 Triple Oak Lane, Hot Springs, Va. 24445 or to the Highland County Rescue Squad, P. O. Box 268, Monterey, Va. 24465.
