Former Longdale Resident Dies In Salem At Age 85

Betty Lou Conner Smith, age 85, formerly of Buck Mountain Road in Roanoke, Virginia died Monday, October 21, 2019 at Richfield Living, Salem, Virginia.

She was born June 10, 1934 in Longdale Furnace, Alleghany County, Virginia to the late John William and Easter Annie Coffey Conner.

She was a secretary in Radiology Records for Patterson Pope, a homemaker, and a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church in Baltimore, MD.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, David Lee Smith; a son, John David "J.D." Smith; four sisters; four brothers; and a great granddaughter, Victoria Leigh Swiger.

She is survived by two daughters, Betty Dianne Smith Benjamin and husband, Charles of Springrove, PA, and Gloria Jean Smith Miller and husband, Bill of Catawba; five grandchildren, Dianne Elizabeth Swiger and husband, Dana, Melissa Kaye Arthur and husband, Shawn, Jamie Dawn Smith, Kristina Anne Miller, and Rebecca Lynne Sirry; and numerous great grandchildren, great great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A graveside funeral service will be held on Thursday, October 24, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. in Central Advent Christian Cemetery, Clifton Forge, with Reverend Lynn Wright officiating. Interment will immediately follow. Pallbearers will be selected from friends and family attending the service.

The family will receive friends at Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge, on Thursday morning one hour prior to the service.

The family suggests memorial tributes take the form of contributions to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or the Alzheimer's Association.
