Obituary for Barry Lynn Deacon Barry Lynn Deacon
Longtime Kroger Produce Department Employee Was Mt. Horeb United Methodist Church Member

Barry Lynn Deacon, 68, of Lexington, Virginia passed away Monday, November 18, 2019 at Augusta Medical Center.

Born July 6, 1951, in Rockbridge County, he was a son of the late John Thomas Deacon and Arna Gladys Agnor Deacon.

Barry was also preceded in death by his special canine companion "Zippy." Barry was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Barry was a member of the Mt. Horeb United Methodist Church, where he served as the chairman of the Pastor-Parish Relations Committee. His curiosity about the history of Mt. Horeb resulted in exhaustive research and historical documentation in the format of photo albums that are stored at the church and will be treasured by many generations to come.

Barry retired from Kroger's Produce Department with over 30 years of dedicated service. Barry's kind heart and passion for helping others had far-reaching effects, well beyond Lexington. He was the organizer of the Stop Hunger Now meals program, which has prepared thousands of meals over the past few years at Effinger Fire Department.

Barry also played a key role in establishing new telephone service equipment in his neighborhood through his steadfast determination to solve a serious infrastructure problem plaguing his neighborhood.

On a lighter note, over the past three years, Barry established himself as the honorary construction superintendent and security guard of The Seclusion venue, located near Barry’s home. Barry's daily visits on his John Deere Gator brought great fellowship, jokes and laughter to all who crossed his path. He was proud to be involved with the project, and helped wherever and whenever needed. He will be forever in our hearts.

Surviving are Barry's "Angels," a loving extended family, and a multitude of special friends, too many to mention.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, November 23 at Mt. Horeb United Methodist Church with the Rev. William Bearden, the Rev. Jim Bolinger, and Pastor Lester Kennedy III officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Barry's memory to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, P. O. Box 50, Memphis, TN 38101 or Mt. Horeb United Methodist Church, 31 Pullen Road, Lexington, VA 24450 or Rockbridge SPCA, P. O. Box 528, Lexington, VA 24450.

Arrangements are by Harrison Funeral Home & Crematory.
