Obituary for William Warren (Bill) Jonas William Warren (Bill) Jonas
Dunlap High School Graduate Was Longtime Highlands Area Teacher, Coach

Mr. William Warren (Bill) Jonas, age 79, of Covington, Virginia died at his residence.

He was the husband of Rebecca Belma Thompson Jonas.

Mr. Jonas was born October 30, 1940 in Ivanhoe, the son of the late Payton W. Jonas and Mary Ellen Davis Jonas.

A lifetime member of this community, he was a graduate of Dunlap High School and Emory and Henry College. Following college, Bill was employed as a teacher and coach in the local school systems where he was beloved by several generations of students.

Also, Mr. Jonas was a retirement advisor with Virginia Retirement Specialists as well as the owner of Bill's Sports Center for eight years.

Bill was a member of Granbery Memorial United Methodist Church. He was also a member of the Alleghany Highlands Kiwanis Club, where he served as treasurer for many years.

Mr. Jonas is survived by two sons, William Alexander Jonas and fiance, Meridith McGarrity of Gaithersburg, MD and Terrance "Toby" Steven Jonas and wife, Lisa of Clifton Forge; four grandchildren, Spencer Hadley Jonas, Claire Madeline Jonas, Trevor Mason Jonas and Haley Brianna Jonas; brother, Eddie Jonas and wife, Sandra of Bristol; "Cousin-Brother", Gary Ratcliffe and wife, Debbie of Hot Springs; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

A funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Friday, November 29, 2019 at Granbery Memorial United Methodist Church with Rev. Sung Yoo officiating. Entombment will follow in Alleghany Memorial Park Mausoleum.

The family will receive friends on Friday morning from 11:30 a.m. until time of service at the church.

The family suggests that memorial tributes take the form of contributions to the Alleghany Highlands Kiwanis Club, P. O. Box 902, Covington VA 24426.
