USFS To Publish Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement On Pipeline Project

Roanoke, VA (Nov. 17, 2022) - The USDA Forest Service published a Notice of Intent in the Federal Register, November 17, announcing that it will begin preparing a Supplement Environmental Impact Statement for the Mountain Valley Pipeline. The link to the Notice can be found at: https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2022/11/17/2022-24994/jefferson-national-forest-monroe-county-west-virginia-giles-and-montgomery-county-virginia-mountain,

Mountain Valley Pipeline, LLC proposes to construct and operate a buried, 42-inch interstate natural gas pipeline from northwestern West Virginia to southern Virginia, crossing 3.5 miles of the Jefferson National Forest

“As a federal land management agency with a multiple-use mission, the Forest Service considers authorization of many different types of uses on National Forest System lands,” said Joby Timm, forest supervisor for the Jefferson National Forest. “Our mission is caring for the land and serving people.”

The Forest Service is preparing a Supplement Environmental Impact Statement to analyze amending the Jefferson National Forest Plan to allow for the use and occupancy of National Forest System lands for the Mountain Valley Pipeline Project.

“When analyzing projects, we follow all pertinent laws, regulations and policies when considering a potential authorization on Forest Service land,” Timm said.

The supplemental analysis will address the United State Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit’s January 2022 ruling, along with any new information and changed conditions since the July 2020 analysis was published
