'Mountain Toppers' Healthy Aging Initiative Defined

Low Moor, VA (April 1, 2024) - The Mountain Toppers Healthy Aging initiative aims at empowering seniors to live every day to the fullest.

Enjoy health chats, Bingo and lunch as the Mountain Toppers meet every third Thursday of the month, beginning on Thursday, April 18, in the W.N. “John” Rice Community Room at the Alleghany Highlands Regional Library from 10 a.m. to 12 noon. The library is located at 406 W. Riverside Street in downtown Covington.

Mountain Toppers is a collaboration between the Alleghany Highlands YMCA Healthy Highlands program, ConnectionsPlus Healthcare & Hospice and the Alleghany Highlands Regional Library. There is no cost and the public is invited to attend.

“We are so excited to be partnering with these agencies to bring this program to the Alleghany Highlands,” said Lisa Sponaugle, Alleghany Highlands Regional Library director. “Our seniors need a regular program to look forward to that helps bring knowledge, awareness and fellowship to help them embrace the aging process.”

This healthy initiative is the brainchild of Dr. Sandra McHenry, Healthy Highlands program leader. Dr. McHenry designs programs aimed to create positive, healthy lifestyle changes throughout the Alleghany Highlands.

“Aging isn’t synonymous with slowing down,” Dr. McHenry said. “By engaging in mental, physical and social activities, we can all live healthier, happier and longer lives.”

Lunch will be provided by LewisGale Hospital-Alleghany, The Bistro at Bath Community Hospital and other community organizations. Lunch on the 18th will be provided by The Bistro.

At the initial meeting, the group will discuss the needs of our community and brainstorm future topics that need to be addressed.

“ConnectionsPlus Healthcare & Hospice is honored to partner with the Alleghany Highlands YMCA and Alleghany Highlands Regional Library on an important initiative for the community,” said Katelyn Lunsford, outreach director for ConnectionsPlus. “Providing available resources and education to the community on the topic of healthy aging is something every community should have access to, and we are excited to start this here in the Alleghany Highlands.”

The Alleghany Highlands YMCA Healthy Highlands Program is an initiative aimed at promoting and improving the health of all Alleghany Highlands residents. For more information on the program, email Dr. McHenry at smchenryahymca@gmail.com or call (540) 962-9622.
