VSP Investigating Fatal Crash In Alleghany County

| Alleghany County, VA (July 31, 2024) - Virginia State Police is investigating a two-vehicle crash which resulted in a fatality. The crash occurred Friday (July 26) at 9:26 p.m. on Interstate 64, four tenths of a mile west of Exit 7 in Alleghany County.
A 2003 Dodge Ram was traveling east on Interstate 64 when the vehicle lost control and ran off the left side of the roadway and overturned. A 2006 Toyota Corolla was also traveling east and lost control, ran off the left side of the roadway and struck the Dodge and a pedestrian which had stopped to assist in the first crash.
The Dodge was driven by Robert R. Holmes, 51, of Covington, Va. Mr. Holmes was wearing his seatbelt and was transported to the hospital. The passenger, 27-year-old Emmanuel Dontrell Smothers was wearing his seatbelt, and died at the scene when the Dodge was struck by the Toyota.
The Toyota was driven by Jesse J. Derringer, 25, of Blue Ridge, Va. Mr. Derringer was wearing his seatbelt and was not injured.
The 35-year-old pedestrian was severely injured and transported to the hospital.
Holmes and Derringer were both charged with Reckless Driving.
The crash remains under investigation.
