Botetourt Co. Dept. of Fire & EMS Launches Pay-Per-Call Incentive Program Goal Is To Boost Volunteer Engagement |
| Botetourt County, VA – The Botetourt County Department of Fire & EMS is proud to announce the launch of a new Pay-Per-Call Incentive Program designed to incentivize volunteer personnel for their active participation in fire and EMS operations. This initiative supports the department’s ongoing efforts to strengthen recruitment, enhance retention, and recognize the dedication of its volunteer workforce.
Effective July 1 st, the new policy outlines a structured payment system tied to the operational levels and responsibilities of volunteers. Financial incentives ranging from $5 to $20 per call is based on certification levels and additional responsibilities, such as being a volunteer operational officer, with additional incentives available for volunteers who reach certain training benchmarks.
“We want to show our appreciation for the volunteer training and time spent preparing and responding to fires and emergencies in our neighborhoods. Our volunteers make a valuable commitment to our citizens, as well as their properties. This program is one way that the citizens and the county can show our appreciation and commitment to our volunteers,” said Mr. Walter Michael, Board of Supervisors member for the Blue Ridge district, who also serves as a committee member of the Fire & EMS committee.
Volunteer personnel maintaining accurate records in response tracking software, completing training through our learning management system, and meeting established participation benchmarks will qualify for a bonus of up to $100 annually.
Furthermore, special financial incentives of up to $1,000 are available to those who obtain required initial certifications such as Firefighter I and Firefighter II, or Emergency Medical Technician, and remain active for at least six months post-certification.
“This program takes our recruitment and retention efforts to a new level,” said Zach Beckner, Troutville Volunteer Fire Department Fire Chief. “It’s not just about financial recognition - it's about building a stronger, consistent response system and showing our volunteer personnel that their time and commitment to the community truly matters.”
To participate, all members must be in good standing with the station and meet minimum training and documentation standards as outlined in the Botetourt Fire & EMS Pay-Per-Call policy.
“We are excited to see how this new incentive will bolster our efforts in recruiting and retaining our volunteer workforce. This initiative has been a collaborative effort at all levels. We are thankful to have a Board of Supervisors and County Administration that supports these critical initiatives for the overall benefit to our community,” said Department of Fire & EMS Chief Jason Ferguson.
