Free School Meals to Continue for All AHPS Students   Low Moor, VA (JUly 9, 2025) - lleghany Highlands Public Schools announces its continued participation in the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) under the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010, ensuring all students receive free nutritious breakfast and lunch meals at no cost to families.  The school division qualifies for the program based on community economic need. Building on previous years’ success, all schools in the division will again provide healthy meals to every student each school day without requiring households to submit meal applications. This ongoing commitment supports student health, well-being, and academic achievement by removing barriers to access nutritious food. Debra Buckner, Nutrition Services Director, stated, "We are proud to continue offering free, nutritious meals to all school families in our community. Good nutrition is essential for learning and growth, and we want to ensure that no child goes hungry during the school day. This program helps us provide that critical support to every family we serve." Alleghany Highlands Public Schools was established in July 2022 through the merger of Alleghany County Public Schools, Covington City Public Schools, and Jackson River Technical Center. The school division is jointly funded by Alleghany County and the City of Covington, combining resources to provide enhanced educational opportunities for the community. Copies of the division’s policy for providing free meals under the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Programs remain available for review at each school and the central school nutrition office. All school families will be informed annually via letter, which will include details of the program and contact information for questions or assistance.
