World War II Navy Veteran Was C&O Weighwmaster For 45 Years

Robert (Spud) George Howard Jr., 92, of 3317 Longdale Station Road, Clifton Forge, Virginia died at his residence Sunday, February 9, 2020 surrounded by his loving wife of 71 years and family.

He was born December 22, 1927 in Springwood, Virginia to the late Robert George Howard Sr. and Virginia May Young Howard.

He served in the United States Navy in World War II, and was a weighmaster for the C&O Railroad for 45 years.

He enjoyed hunting and fishing and was a member of the Advent Christian denomination, where he served as a teacher for many years.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four sisters, one brother, and an infant son.

He is survived by his wife, Alice May Taylor Howard; three daughters, Alice Carroll and husband, Kenny, Linda Walton and husband, Dickie, and Brenda Simpson and husband, Butch; one son, Robbie Howard and wife, Heather; eight grandchildren, Kacy Carroll and wife, Liza, Steven Carroll and wife, Gina Adrales, Rickie Walton and wife, Lesa, Cristy Cahoon and fiance, Mike Sheppard, Tiffany Johnson and husband, Jeffrey, B.J. Simpson and wife, Teri, Josh Howard and partner, Elizabeth Catte, and Matt Howard and wife, Laura Vrana; ten great-grandchildren, Zack Puckett and wife, Connie, Zach Carroll, Chelsie Cahoon, Jordan Carroll, Cortnie Walton, Maegan Herwald and husband, Hunter, Patrick Cahoon, Cristen Walton, Bryce Carroll, and Clark Johnson; four great-great-grandchildren, Rowan Puckett, Daisy Walton, Lucas Herwald, and Parker Walton; special neighbors, Susan and Jeremy Curtis; as well as many nieces, nephews, and other treasured friends.

In keeping with his wishes, his body has been cremated. A memorial service will be scheduled for a later date. The family will receive friends in the coming days at 3317 Longdale Station Road in Clifton Forge.

The family would like to thank the entire team of caregivers at Mountain Regional Hospice.
