Obituary for Opal Hostetter Shafer Opal Hostetter Shafer
Lexington Native Dies At Age 89

Opal Hostetter Shafer, 89, formerly of Lexington, Virginia passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, February 4, 2020, after a short illness.

Opal was born in Lexington on April 30, 1930 to James Columbus and Sadie Reynolds Hostetter.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her five brothers, Grant, Paul, Orson, Carl (twin) and Burton; two sisters, Rita Hostetter and Leola Covill; the love of her life, Eldridge LeRoy Shafer from Buena Vista, and their daughter, Patricia Lynn Loftis.

She is survived by one sister, Agnes Reynolds of Lexington; three daughters, Wanda Souza of Staunton, Pam O'Sullivan (Ray Spiggle) of Hampton, and Cindy Sumrell (Ken) of Williamsburg; and one son, Roy Shafer of Lexington; plus nine extremely loving grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild.

Her stories of working at the State Luncheonette and McCrum's Drug Store, meeting so many of the students, and having good, clean fun, will linger in our minds forever. She met her future husband there, married in Ohio, then settled in Newport News and Hampton to raise their family.

A memorial will be held in late spring in Lexington with family and friends.
