Former Master Police Detective With Prince William County Police Department Dies At Age 67

David Wayne Smith, 67, of Covington, Virginia died Thursday, March 12, 2020 at his residence.

He was born August 25, 1952 in Covington, a son of the late Emmett Smith and Eleanor Bennett Smith.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Billy Smith and Ray Smith, and one sister, Lillian Miller.

Wayne graduated from Alleghany High School in 1971. He worked for the Prince William County Police Department in Manassas from 1973 until 2002 where he earned the title of Master Police Detective.

Wayne loved riding his Harley Davidson Motorcycle and playing poker with his family and friends.

Surviving are his son, Michael Smith and his wife, Jessica of Culpeper; his daughter, Lee Ann Sparks of Roanoke; four grandchildren, Lilllian, Noah, Bennett and Charlotte; two brothers, Emmett Lee Smith of New Jersey and Bill Smith of Covington; one sister, Myrtle Kimberlin of Harrisonburg and several nieces and nephews. Also surviving are Mary Cameron and a "brother from a different mother", Dave May of Covington.

In keeping with his wishes, his body has been cremated.

The funeral service will be held Saturday, March 21, 2020 at 4:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Arritt Funeral Home with the Rev. Donald Earwood officiating.

The family will receive their friends following the service at Arritt Funeral Home.

The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to Mountain Regional Hospice, P. O. Box 637, Clifton Forge, VA 24422.
