Obituary for James Merritt Chambers James Merritt Chambers
World War II Veteran Was Hercules Retiree

James Merritt Chambers, 94, of 416 Church Street, Clifton Forge, Virginia died Saturday, April 18, 2020 at LewisGale Hospital-Alleghany in Low Moor.

He was born on October 24, 1925 in Russell, Kentucky, a son of the late John Merritt and Carlie Sheets Chambers.

He was retired from Hercules, Inc. with 16 years of service, and loved to tinker in his garage and with his antique cars. He was also an avid native trout fisherman and loved to play pool.

Mr. Chambers was a Navy Veteran of World War II, serving from October 23, 1943 until April 20, 1946 in the Pacific Theatre. He received the American Area Medal, Asiatic Pacific Area Medal with four bronze stars and the Philippine Liberation Medal with two bronze stars.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Catherine Chamber, Dreama Scruggs, Farrah Hatch; and a brother, Gene Chambers.

He is survived by a daughter, Robin Gail Dressler and husband, Timmy of Millboro; a son, Jed Newton Chambers of Clifton Forge; two grandchildren, Robert Neal, Jr., Heather Kern; three great-grandchildren, Layla, Catana, and Damien James.

In keeping with his wishes his body has been cremated and no services are scheduled.
