World War II Veteran Was VDOT Heavy Equipment Operator

Charles Richard Porterfield, 99, of Brownsburg, Virginia died Thursday, April 16, 2020 at his daughter's home in Charlottesville.

Born April 22, 1920, in Fairfield, he was a son of the late Alfred Porterfield and Elizabeth B. Porterfield.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Frances Craney Porterfield; brother, Wilson Porterfield Sr.; and sister, Ethel B. Morris.

He was a member of the Faith Mission Church of God in Christ and retired from VDOT as a heavy equipment operator.

Charles served in the U. S. Army during the World War II invasion in Normandy.

Surviving are his children, Gwendolyn A. Porterfield, Charles A. Porterfield, Frances P. Land and husband, Stanley, Kenneth W. Porterfield and wife, Sandy, and Agnes G. Porterfield; five grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren and two step-grandchildren.

A private graveside service will be at Asbury United Methodist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Terry Phillips officiating.
